Learning your table manners

With a name that promises so much – the Manners European Place Setting – my first thought was whether it came with built-in table manners for kids. Unfortunately it doesn’t, but this beautiful place setting for kids will put them on the path of proper table etiquette for life.

The set comprises individual fish, meat and appetiser plates, a soup bowl and separate cutlery for the fish, meat, appetiser, soup and desert courses. It is presented on a nifty tray that has jigsaw-like spaces for each piece, so there will never be any confusion about which fork goes where when setting the table. I realise I may be pushing culinary principles by counting fish fingers as the fish course, but at least my kids will know which is the fish knife when their tastes expand to something more exotic such as pan-fried snapper with preserved lemon dressing.

Also available is the Zen Japanese Place Setting that includes three plates, two bowls and chopsticks. All sets are hand made from bamboo, a material that is light and easy to handle for children, and come packaged in a plaited bamboo box.

The place settings are available from Little Fashion Gallery. The European setting is £125, the Zen setting is £100 and individual plate and cutlery combinations begin at £20. Little Fashion Gallery ship to Australia.
