Learn to count with Abigail by Catherine Rayner

Abigail by Catherine Rayner

Time for another book review from my discerning one-year-old. Books that teach counting are all the rage at our house but Abigail is more than just a book of numbers. The creative illustrative styles of Catherine Rayner are what make this book a treasure.

There is not too much of a storyline to Abigail: she is a giraffe that loves to count and (spoiler) makes it all the way to ten by the story’s end. What makes this book enchanting are the gorgeous illustrations by Catherine Rayner that vividly paint the African landscape that Abigail calls home and the other creatures that live there.

In Abigail, splotchy, stylised characters gather against a soft backdrop where sky and land melt into one another. Catherine Rayner has a beautifully distinct style (remember Augustus and His Smile? Gorgeous.) and she loves to play with the layout of pictures and words. This makes Abigail a stimulating read for young minds as each page is different from the last.

Another delight is the way in which Abigail the giraffe is depicted. She is often bending down or squeezing into frame, giving us a sense of her awkward size and lanky shape. There is also a great fold out page near the end for an added surprise.

Kate was a regular of Melbourne’s music and film scenes, but these days she is on the mum scene. Mother to one adorable little hipster, Kate loves seeking out the latest trends in technology, vintage-style kids clothing, and offbeat kids products. She is often found riding her bike by the Yarra river with baby on back, heading for a good soy latte at the latest kid-friendly cafe. She wants to get there before it becomes cool. So Melbourne.
