Lara Bingle’s just chatted to media about her very glamorous life, but she touched on the less glam bits – like scrolling through parenting sites in the dead of night and trying to protect her children’s privacy – too.
“We love our privacy”
Model Lara and her husband, actor Sam Worthington, are parents to two little boys, 2-year-old Rocket and 10-month-old Racer. In an interview with lifestyle liftout Stellar, Lara said the couple found balancing their high-profile careers with their kids right to an off-camera childhood a very tricky business.
“We love our privacy and, for our children, we decided early on to give them as much privacy as we could. Sometimes our reality is difficult for Rocket and Racer, but we try hard to protect them. That’s our main focus because [our sons] don’t have a choice,” Lara explained.
Kids’ privacy is a challenge for many mere mortals, in this digitally obsessed world. One can only imagine the difficulty when the career you’ve stumbled into requires constant exposure.
“I never want to embarrass them”
Lara revealed she’s keen to be a mindful mum, and earning her kids admiration and respect is high on the agenda.
“When they’re my age, what will they want to do? I don’t know, but I never want to embarrass them, or do things they wouldn’t like. So protecting them seems the best possible answer,” Lara confirmed, noting that she’s had to learn some things the hard way, as her success has snowballed.
“I’ve learnt from past experience that once you put something out there on the internet, it’s there forever,” Lara told Stellar.
“I find solace in that”
The mum-of-two says the internet has been helpful in her transition from model to model-mum. She notes that while some advice needs to be taken with a grain of salt, there are places online where parents can find community and support (hello Babyology!).
“I try not to Google too much as some of the [baby advice] can be really frightening. But I have [a website] I go to, and I read all the comments from other mums. I find solace in that. It makes me feel that I’m not alone. There are other mums out there going through the same thing.”
“It becomes about them”
Lara’s notoriously private hubby Sam recently spoke a little about parenting, revealing that having kids has (understandably) completely revolutionised his approach to life.
“My life changed once I had children. Everything changes when you have kids because it’s not about you and what are you doing anymore. Suddenly it becomes about them and that leads you to go, ‘Well I don’t need to be angry at this person anymore or angry at the world because that’s not important.’ What is important is them and that they have a future and a father that appears hopeful.”
