Kind cafe owner gives exhausted mum more than just a coffee

Drained from a baby that wouldn’t sleep and battling post natal depression, a hospital band still around her wrist, this exhausted mum stumbled to a cafe looking for a little solace in a simple cup of coffee.  But the cafe door was locked. However, the dark clouds were about to part, and a good deed shine through. 

The mum, who wants to remain anonymous, says the cafe owner had just locked up, ready to finish up for the day. She writes in a letter to the kind stranger, “I wanted to thank you for inviting me in out of the heat and kindly making me a coffee, even though you probably wanted to go home”.

She continues,”When you asked if I’d walked from the hospital, I was too embarrassed to tell you I’ve got post natal depression and my baby doesn’t sleep and I’m just exhausted. Walking to the cafe for a break was what I needed as much as the coffee”.

The tired mum says that one small act of kindness made the difference to her day. The letter she penned never made it to the cafe owner, but the mum has passed it on to Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Australia (PANDA) to help spread the message.

“I wanted to post it on their Facebook page, or share it on social media so others could think about how they might be interacting with people with depression on any given day,” she tells PANDA.
