Kim Kardashian’s doctor said she’d had a miscarriage. Thankfully she hadn’t.

Keeping Up With The Kardashians has just turned 10 and a celebratory episode to mark the occasion shared some never before seen footage – and revealed details of Kim’s harrowing miscarriage mix-up when she was pregnant with North.

Ten years old!

Keeping Up With The Kardashians has been following the Kardashian-Jenner family for a decade, and fans of the show have witnessed everything from Kourtney delivering her own baby to Caitlin Jenner’s transition. Despite appearances, however, the family and production team keep a tight rein on what actually makes it to our tellies.

During the anniversary special, Kim, who is mum to 4-year-old North and 1-year-old Saint, revealed the jump between what we saw on-screen, and what was actually happening in her life. Around five years ago, an episode aired with Kim lounging about with her sisters, complaining her stomach was hurting… badly. It was just before Thanksgiving and she’d not yet announced her pregnancy on the show.

“You had a miscarriage”

Off-camera, Kim was so worried about the status of her pregnancy – and the wee baby she was growing, her first with musician Kanye West – that she’d flown home [to LA] to see her doctor. After examining Kim, he gave her the terrible news that he couldn’t locate the baby’s heartbeat.

“I was so scared, I was having so much pain. I mean, at one point I thought I had a miscarriage — I was pretty certain about it. I didn’t know what was going on. I flew all the way home on Thanksgiving and the doctor told me, ‘There’s no heartbeat, you had a miscarriage. Let’s get through it, come in after Thanksgiving dinner.’”

Total eclipse of the heart

Actually, scrap that…

All was not as it seemed, thankfully, because a return visit to the doctor the next day confirmed there WAS a heartbeat and that everything was going to be okay. Kim said she didn’t tell anyone about her scare, except Kanye and Kourtney, and that the difficult experience strengthened her relationship with her husband.

“I went in that morning and [the doctor] was like, ‘There’s a heartbeat, you didn’t have a miscarriage!’ and I was like, ‘Oh my God, this is a sign.’ It was such an emotional Thanksgiving, and Kourtney was the only one that knew about it. Her and Kanye, because we were in Miami living together,” Kim revealed.

It’s probable that she was in the very early stages of her pregnancy at this point, and it’s sometimes tricky to locate a heartbeat in these early weeks. Still, it’s regrettable that her doctor diagnosed a miscarriage so swiftly. We can’t imagine how she must have felt that night, thinking she’d lost her baby. Thank goodness the doctor’s speedy conclusion proved wrong.

(News of the miscarriage scare eventually made its way to media outlets who covered it in their own way.)

“I just want people to see”

Anniversary special host and Keeping Up With The Kardashians co-creator Ryan Seacrest also quizzed Kim, Khloe and Kourtney on how they approach filming with husbands, boyfriends and kids – and we admit we’ve always wondered about how they manage this, especially when Kanye pops up so very, very fleetingly.

“It’s such a personal choice,” Kim admitted. “You can fall in love with someone, and it’s not their job to be on our show. Kanye respects what I do and sometimes he’s on, if he happens to be there, or will let us film if we’re at a concert.”

Privacy please. Or not…

Kim said that when she was pregnant with North, she and Kanye vowed to keep her baby away from the cameras, but once she was a mum she completely changed her tune. Because adorable.

“At first we were like, ‘Our kids will never be on, my daughter is not going to be on.’ But she’s always around me and she’s so cute, so I just want people to see [that] a little bit. It’s never a story revolving them or about them or anything too personal. We know that we signed up for this, but our kids did not.”

Interestingly, Kourtney says that very often the kids will be filmed (she’s mum to 7-year-old Mason, 5-year-old Penelope and 2-year-old Reign) and then they’ll edit them back or right out of the footage.

“I think the boundaries are always changing,” Kourtney said. “We’ll definitely go through moments where we’re like, ‘Cut the kids way back.’”

Happy Birthday to KUWTK! Thanks for sharing so many of life’s tricky bits with us – and sparking important conversations.
