Kim Kardashian and hubby Kanye West welcomed baby number three earlier this week; another daughter born via a surrogate to join older siblings Saint and North. The mega reality TV star has now shared intimate details around why she didn’t carry and deliver her new baby herself.

Baring all

Three days after her new daughter entered the world, 37-year-old Kim has written a blog post to her fans via her website and app, explaining why she and husband Kanye chose surrogacy for their newest addition to the family.

“I have always been really honest about my struggles with pregnancy. Preeclampsia and placenta accreta are high-risk conditions, so when I wanted to have a third baby, doctors said that it wasn’t safe for my — or the baby’s — health to carry on my own,” she wrote on Thursday, 18th January.

Not actually a surrogate

The Keeping up the Kardashians star went on to clarify that despite herself previously using the more commonly used term ‘surrogate’ (in relation to how her new baby came to enter the world), the woman who helped their dream of a third child come true was actually a gestational carrier instead.

“After exploring many options, Kanye and I decided to use a gestational carrier,” she explained. “Although I have used the term surrogate in the past, a gestational carrier is actually the technical term for a woman who carries a baby that she has no biological relationship to. A traditional surrogate donates her egg, is artificially inseminated with the father’s sperm and then carries the baby to term. Since we implanted my fertilized egg in our gestational carrier, our baby is biologically mine and Kanye’s.”

A tough journey

When it comes to surrogates or gestational carriers, many parents-to-be often choose friends or family members to carry and deliver their child. But not Kimye, who opted to go through an agency instead. Even still, the new mum of three admits she found it very difficult not carrying her baby herself.

“Having a gestational carrier is definitely different, but anyone who says or thinks it’s the easy way out is completely wrong. People assume it’s better because you don’t have to deal with the physical changes, pain or complications with delivery, but for me it was so hard to not carry my own child, especially after I carried North and Saint,” she confessed on her blog.

First contact

The couple’s new baby girl was born on Monday, 15th January weighing 7 pounds, 6 ounces, and Kim was apparently the first to have skin-to-skin contact with her newborn followed by Kanye, according to a US source. The Kardashian family doctor Paul Crane delivered the new addition and revealed the birth was complication free. As of yet the newest Kardashian Klan member is unnamed with fans worldwide having a lot of fun making wild speculations about the bub’s moniker.

The greatest gift

It’s clear that Kim and Kanye are in the new baby love bubble, with their announcement post on Monday expressing their gratitude and love for their new baby. In a show of further appreciation, Kim also concluded her blog post by again thanking her gestational carrier and modern science – and appeared to change her mind on the frustrating journey to get there.

“I’m so grateful for modern technology and that this is even possible. It’s not for everyone, but I absolutely love my gestational carrier and this was the best experience I’ve ever had,” she explained.

“Our gestational carrier gave us the greatest gift one could give. The connection with our baby came instantly and it’s as if she was with us the whole time. Having a gestational carrier was so special for us and she made our dreams of expanding our family come true. We are so excited to finally welcome home our baby girl.”

Congratulations again Kim and Kanye! And we can’t wait to find out your new baby girl’s name!
