Kids art, all grown up

The Monster Engine art project

The Monster Engine art project

By nature, most children’s drawings and paintings are relatively simple. But what if you were to take a child’s drawing and add details such as light, shade, depth and intricate facial features?

The Monster Engine, an eleven-year art project created by illustrator Dave Devries, takes children’s drawings and paints them professionally. The results are a bit scary, a bit gruesome and most likely considered thoroughly awesome by their ‘original’ artists.

The Monster Engine project has been turned into a book which includes the original drawings, Devries’s painted interpretation and interviews with the children who dreamed up the amazing creatures.

Take a moment to watch the interview clip with Devries – the footage of him running a classroom session where a monster is created before the children’s eyes is great.

Katrina Whelen

Katrina studied planning and design, did the hard yards working in a big office building and then traded it all in for a relaxing (!) life at home with four children. She now fills her time with writing, completing a degree in genetics and taxiing her children around Melbourne to their various sporting commitments (not necessarily in that order).
