Family feeling the winter blues? We’re smack-bang in the middle of our coldest season in Australia, but that doesn’t mean holidays are on hold. Whether you’re keen to escape the cold, or you want to embrace it – we’ve sourced a smorgasbord of family-friendly winter holiday destinations.
Let’s start with those of us in the southern states who are champing at the bit to feel the warmth of the sun on our skin. Families keen to chase the sun up north – take a look at Paradise Resort on the Gold Coast. It’s an absolute gem on that gorgeous sunny stretch, and the kids will adore it.
Looking abroad, we’ve found and tested some stunning international, family-friendly locations. Sunwings Resorts Phuket is the stuff of dreams. Relaxing, beautiful and with daily entertainment for the kids – this one should be on your short-list.
While we’re on the subject of Thailand, here’s another brilliant destination – Centara Hotels & Resorts. An amazing location and two kids clubs? We’re on our way!
Crystal clear water, cultural experiences and luxury accommodation are all par for the course at the stunning Vomo Fiji.
Still in the Pacific Islands, and another must-stay is the Intercontinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa. It’s nestled on Natadola Bay, taking in Natadola Beach, which has been voted among one of the world’s best.
While an endless summer sounds like heaven – there’s nothing wrong with embracing the season and exploring locally. A trip to the city can be a great little break for families – just pack the kids’ gumboots and you’re all set. The uber-hip InterContinental Double Bay Sydney is perfectly geared towards families. Even down to the children’s menu at the restaurant, which has been developed by a celebrity chef and children’s food expert Annabel Karmel.
Beautiful views and a top location are the hallmarks of the Sydney Harbour Marriot Hotel. Attention to detail is key, with child-sized bathrobes and little touches that make the kids feel extra special.
Bondi Beach is beautiful regardless the time of year, so a mini-break at the Adina Apartment Hotel Bondi Beach is great for a winter sojourn.
Those with small babies will love QT Sydney’s BabyQ package. It’s tailored to make your break as stress-free as possibly, with lots of great inclusions.
There’s no reason the southern part of Australia should be discounted as a winter holiday destination. Particularly for those in the warmer states who are keen for a taste of true winter. South Australia’s Flinders Ranges will give the kids an authentic taste of Australia – as will the homestead, Angorichina Station.
The southern-most tip of mainland Australia is Wilsons Promontory in Victoria. Its beauty is jaw dropping, and there are some inviting accommodation options, including Bear Gully Cottages.
If cosy lunches, snow-capped mountains and inviting open fires sound like your winter paradise – it’s time to head to Tasmania. It’s a brilliant family holiday destination, and getting there on the Spirit of Tasmania is all part of the adventure.
