Kalon – the modern difference

When I think about modern design, particularly in relation to children’s furniture, pieces that are sleek and streamlined immediately come to mind. Which is why the range from LA’s Kalon is refreshing. It is undoubtedly modern, the details are intricate but not fussy and the use of bamboo wood with its rich, dark grain gives the furniture tactile appeal.

Kalon has a broad range of pieces in their collection but it’s the crib and the toddler bed that stand out.

Look closely at the rails of the crib to truly appreciate the rich grain of the bamboo wood. After many years of nursery furniture being dominated by white veneers and pale wood finishes, it’s great to see something completely different. The height of the mattress in the crib can be adjusted to three levels and one side of the crib folds down for easy access.

When your child is ready to move to a bed, the crib converts to a toddler-sized bed. Although the modern shape and beautiful wood grain of the base is certainly enough to set the bed apart from standard bedroom furniture, decorative sides and headboards can be added to contain wrigglers. Perhaps because I am such a fan of all things Art Deco, the ‘square but rounded’ design of these add-on side rails really appeal to me.

Kalon furniture is available from Spunky Sprout who will ship to Australia by arrangement. The toddler bed ranges from US$699 – $1150 and the crib is US$1400.
