Why make boring old chocolate cake when you can just as easily throw together a Sea Salt and Caramel Chocolate Cake for the school bake sale?
I’m a huge Jamie Oliver fan and not just because his recipes always work for me! That said, I’m not a huge fan of baking – although I enjoy cooking, watching a cake rise (or not) and whipping up batches of buttercream icing is not my thing. Which is why I like to have a reliable but still impressive cache of recipes for when the school cake stall calls.
Jamie’s Monster Bake Sale, by none other than Jamie Oliver, is a slim little volume containing a baker’s dozen of Jamie’s bake sale winners. Published to raise funds for the British equivalent of Red Nose Day, the book has a good range of biscuits, sweet treats, muffins and cakes.
Since getting my hands on this book, bake sale or none, I have had a little gourmet love affair with the Beautiful Black Forest Cupcakes and the insanely good Sticky Rhubarb and Ginger Cake. I challenge you to find a better carrot cake recipe than Jamie’s moist, sweetly spiced Carrot and Honey Cake and check out the simple and delicious Lemon Butter Biscuits (they’d make a nice alternative this Christmas to traditional shortbread). Kids of course will make a bee-line for the gooey Sticky Toffee Cupcakes.
For the tiny price of this book (just $4.95 from Book Depository, including delivery) you could barely even buy a packet cake mix. So, grab a copy and become the next bake sale (or afternoon tea) hero.
