Oh baby, America’s Super Bowl just got a taste of Aussie humour!

When an annoying father-to-be munches and crunches through a pack of corn chips while the sonographer tries to show the happy couple the little person about to change their lives, well, you can be glad it’s not happening to you. Be thankful it’s only an ad. Have a giggle. And reach for the chippies, because all that talk of corn chips is making us hungry!

Feast your eyes on this hilarious new Doritos commercial that was one of three in the running to be aired during the Super Bowl in the US today. Sadly, the Ultrasound entry by Perth father-of-two Peter Carstairs was pipped by Doritos Dogs, but it shows that a little cheeky Aussie humour goes a long way.

Ultrasound shows a father who has clearly passed on his love of Doritos to his offspring – the unborn bub on the ultrasound lurching and reaching for a chip every time dad puts one in his own mouth. Not realising the connection, the frustrated mum snatches a chip from her husband’s hand and throws it to the other side of the room… but baby follows. Pregnant mums out there edging toward 40 weeks might want to look away, but the rest of us can have a giggle here:

The Doritos Crash the Super Bowl contest invited filmmakers to create their own ad for the brand, with the winner receiving US$1 million and the priceless opportunity to have their commercial screened during the Super Bowl, with an estimated viewing audience of 189 million.

Carstairs, 45, used the ultrasound image of his youngest son Freddy, now nine months old, in the commercial.

He says when he was with his wife getting an ultrasound during her latest pregnancy, an idea popped into his head.

“Wouldn’t it be funny to have a little fun in the hospital room, where everyone is supposed to remain poised, calm and collected,” he says. “The baby in the ultrasound image is Freddy himself – of course with the help of a little camera magic.”

We love it, but it seems not everyone gets the Aussie irreverent sense of humour. After screening, the ad prompted a social media storm, with plenty of Americans left shaking their heads.

We’re happy to reveal though that there were Twitter fans too.

Parenting struggles and cute kids certainly claim attention and make for good ad fodder. Want more ad fun? Take a look at this funny ad campaign where babies show off their ‘poo faces’, emotive ads that tug on our parenting heartstrings and these good ol’ classic Aussie ads from the ‘80s.
