Asked to recall a kitchen item particular to my family, I would have to say patterned glasses. My mum has a thing for prints on glasses and in fact gave me a set of fabulously kitsch purple and lime green patterned glasses last Christmas.
Despite a cupboard full of fab retro print glasses, the Cipher Drinking Glass is the coolest printed glass I’ve ever seen. Designer Damjan Stankovic decorated a glass with what appears to be random coloured squares. But fill the glass with milk, orange juice or cola and the name of what you are drinking magically appears on the side! Essentially, the different shapes and empty spaces work with the colour of the liquid in the glass to reveal a ‘textual sign’ or words.
Obviously you don’t need it spelt out for you to know what you’re drinking but these glasses are simply so much fun plus they have a very cool, Atari/ 80s pop style.
The Cipher Glass is a concept at this stage and not available to buy however the opportunities for promotions and marketing are obvious, so I’m sure it won’t be long before I can add these to my collection (I’m also thinking about the possibilities of a psychic cocktail glass that lets you know when it’s time for a refill…).
