We all know that human touch, especially a hug, has a powerful effect on our lives. Right from the very start, we use touch to connect with others and build important relationships.
The profound impact of hugs
With more than 600 scientific papers published on the effects of human touch on babies, there is now compelling evidence to reinforce that sick babies needing neonatal care do substantially better when being hugged.
Studies show that different types of touch – simple holding, massage, skin-to-skin contact and hugging – all have positive effects on newborns. Touch also leads to the release of the ‘love hormones’ – endorphins, oxytocin and serotonin – which together result in a rather blissed-out baby.
In particular, skin-to-skin contact (especially with mum) is a powerful get-well tool for sick and preterm babies. Not only does it help them cope with pain better, but it also regulates their heart rate, improves sleep, encourages weight gain, increases their breastfeeding rate and strengthens the bond between parent and baby.
Huggies ‘Hugs for Healing’ initiative
Huggies has always believed in the power of hugs, so for the fourth year in a row, Huggies have partnered with Children’s Hospital Foundations Australia to create the ‘Hugs for Healing’ initiative, a national fundraising partnership supporting five of Australia’s most well-known children’s hospitals.
The Huggies ‘Hugs for Healing’ initiative aims to deliver support and care by raising awareness and much needed funding for high priority equipment.
How you can get involved
Support the ‘Hugs for Healing’ initiative by simply tagging a photo of you hugging a loved one with #HugsForHealing and @HuggiesAU on the Huggies Facebook Wall. For every upload, Huggies will donate $1 up to $140,000 to the Children’s Hospitals Foundations Australia, so start hugging for a very worthy cause! Don’t forget, entries must be posted on the Huggies Facebook Page or on your public Instagram account.
Help us reach this goal. Start hugging and get sharing!
