I had doubts my nearly seven year old son would enjoy Hairy Maclary and Friends on stage at the Sydney Opera House, but he was just as enthralled as his four-year-old brother as they chanted those familiar words. All those years of reading the books to my then toddlers sure paid off as they felt right at home with Hairy Maclary and all of his friends. It was like coming home!
And what a joy the books are to read for an adult. The ingenious, rhythmic rhyming schemes enchant young and old alike, as did this charming stage show adapted from the famous books. It’s thoroughly interactive, keeping young fidgeters attentive for the whole 55 minute duration. The play takes you on an amusing journey with all the well-known characters such as Hercules Morse, as big as a horse, Bottomley Potts, covered in spots, Schnitzel von Krumm, with a very low tum and more.
There’s some huge, just-released news too; the author herself, Lynley Dodd, will be at the Sydney Opera House on 29 and 30 December after the 9:30 and 11:30am performances to sign books for her young (and old) fans. Capitalise on this unique opportunity to meet and greet one of the most famous children’s authors!
Tickets (prices vary) are available for performances up to 29 January 2012 from the Sydney Opera House website – make this your summer in Sydney treat for the kids!
