Many of us go through our daily lives believing we live in a fair and just part of the developed world. But a confronting report on Monday night will reveal the alleged horrific treatment of children as young as 10 behind bars in Australia.
ABC’s Four Corners will present the report titled Australia’s Shame: The brutalisation of children behind bars to expose a system it says is breaking children instead of reforming them.
The report, with never-before-seen photos, claims children as young as 10 are being locked up in Australian cells, and 13-year-olds are being placed in solitary confinement.
“If I treated my children like that, the authorities would take my children from me quite properly because I would be behaving cruelly to them,” a lawyer tells Four Corners journalist Caro Meldrum-Hanna.
Some of the young offenders are said to be left for weeks without sunlight or access to running water, and some are even stripped naked, assaulted and tear gassed, the report reveals.
“I don’t think this is happening anywhere else in the developed world, this sort of treatment,” Meldrum-Hanna is told.
“This is barbarism, this is inhumane, this is child abuse,” a lawyer interviewed says.
The special report will go to air tomorrow night (Monday, July 25, 2016) at 8.30pm on ABC TV and iView.
