Goodnight iPad!

By now, I’m sure most parents have seen a certain book that did the rounds last year about ‘going to sleep’. I’m still waiting for a sequel about eating vegetables but in the meantime, score some bedtime story laughs with a parody of that old favourite, Goodnight Moon.

Author ‘Ann Droyd’ (a pseudonym for children’s author David Milgrim) has replaced moons, kittens, mittens and bears in the familiar Goodnight Moon, with iPads, Facebook requests and a “huge LCD Wifi HDTV” to create Goodnight iPad, a simple book with a simple message – don’t forget to ‘switch off’ or ‘power-down’ at the end of the day.

The book pokes fun at our technology-heavy lives – hopefully parents can see the humour! Check out the video clip below for a sneak preview of the story.

Margaret Wise Brown’s Goodnight Moon ends with the sweet, calm words “Goodnight stars, Goodnight air, Goodnight noises everywhere”. In contrast, Goodnight iPad ends with “Goodnight remotes and Netflix streams, Androids, apps and glowing screens. Goodnight MacBook Air, goodnight gadgets everywhere.” I can feel myself getting sleepy already…

Goodnight iPad can be found at Book Depository, along with the original, Goodnight Moon. For another great story about modern technology, you can’t go past It’s a Book! by Lane Smith.

Katrina Whelen

Katrina studied planning and design, did the hard yards working in a big office building and then traded it all in for a relaxing (!) life at home with four children. She now fills her time with writing, completing a degree in genetics and taxiing her children around Melbourne to their various sporting commitments (not necessarily in that order).
