Going Dutch at the dinner table

Here’s an interesting take on the highchair from super-cool Dutch designer Maartje Steenkamp. A mum herself, she says her Mother/Child Dining Table, is a ìpoetique conceptî based on the intimate moment of eating together. It certainly takes mashed peas and strained carrots to a whole new  level of sophisticated dining.

The glossy white finish and smooth clean lines of the Mother/Child table give it an obvious style that no mass-produced highchair emblazoned with cartoon characters can match. And it’s clearly a lot easier to clean than the crusty old metal and plastic number we use in our house. I can easily imagine this doing double-duty in a funky warehouse conversion or apartment somewhere close to the city. At lunchtime, you have a handy baby feeding station. But once baby goes to bed, it reverts to a striking piece of 3D art.
