Those of us who grew up in the 1980s will know all about the obsession with the movie Back to the Future. Who can forget Michael J Fox as Marty McFly and his hover board in the sequel from 1989 which featured him riding in his self-lacing shoes? The movie was set in 2015 and while the long-awaited Nike Mag shoes have finally become a reality, we may have to wait a while longer for the self-lacing version!
The sneakers inspired fans all over the world to attempt copies, petition Nike for years to make them and many a rumour has been circulated on the internet over the past ten years about their impending production. Sneaker enthusiasts, Back to the Future fans and benefactors can now bid on 1500 pairs of limited edition Nike Mags on Ebay, with all proceeds going to The Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. Google’s Sergey Brin has pledged to match the total amount raised, making the potential amount more than $100 million!
These super lightweight shoes are almost carbon copies of those worn in the movie – billed as the most famous shoes never made – and have an LED panel and luminescent Nike logo. Built-in rechargeable batteries in each shoe will make those babies glow for up to five hours. Bidding runs until 18 September at nikemag.ebay.com.
