For quite some time, my eldest boys were obsessed with farms. We spent many hours at Collingwood Children’s Farm (a little slice of farm life in the city) and I invested an amount of money I dare not think about in what I refer to as the ‘million dollar animal collection’ (herds of Schleich cows, flocks of Schleich sheep et cetera). One day, as the boys were engrossed in a game of farms on the lounge room floor, I had a flash of creative energy and decided to make them some farm accessories.
What followed was fairly lame, even by my standards. The green carpet tiles were reasonable paddocks but the blue cellophane duck pond was dismal. So when I saw the incredible farm play rug by Turkish designers IVI, I immediately wished I could rewind time and watch the boys playing farms all over again.
There are four designs in the Play Rug range. The ‘Farm’ and ‘Playing Way’ designs are suited to younger children while the ‘Playing Family’ and ‘Traffic’ designs will appeal to slightly older children. The use of different textures and carpet materials gives these rugs a three dimensional quality that is unlike your standard ‘road’ mat for Matchbox cars. Likewise, the rug featuring the layout of a house is a different take on a traditional dollhouse.
I like that these rugs encourage imaginative play. You only have to watch children playing with Matchbox cars, farm animals or little families of dolls to know that there is a lot going on. The rugs provide a terrific starting point for all sorts of imaginative games.
Rugs are available in two sizes. Small are $159 and large range between $229 and $249. They can be purchased online at Urban Baby.
