Happy election eve, Babyologists! We’ve mercifully reached the pointy end of one of the longest election campaigns in Australian history (still nowhere near as long as pregnancy, but substantially more uncomfortable). To celebrate the culmination of 70-odd days of flesh pressing, baby kissing and pork barrelling we’ve delved into the current crop of Australian federal pollies to source some baby name inspiration. Because by now you’ve already decided who you’re voting for – but deciding on a baby name? That ballot’s likely to stretch nine long months.
If you think your bub could be a future leader of this great nation of ours (and let’s face it, just about everyone’s getting a turn at being PM), there are some marvellous monikers to be had among our political leaders. With more than 1600 candidates in this year’s federal election across the Senate and House of Representatives, there’s a veritable buffet of baby names to peruse.
While seen as playing third fiddle to Australia’s two major political groupings, the Greens party is heading our election baby name wrap, because its candidates have by far some the most awesome monikers (a little ‘left’ of field, with an eco-edge if you will).
If those unique names haven’t quite hit the spot, the Australian Labor Party also has a good helping of left of centre options, with a smattering of old-school Aussie favourites.
If you’re after a something a little more ‘conservative’, how about plucking a pollie name from the Liberal-National alliance? There’s a good balance of names that are unlikely to ruffle any feathers, and good ol’ country charm.
Minor parties and independents
And here’s a wrap of some of our favourite minor party and independent candidate monikers you’ll be seeing on your how to vote cards across the nation. They may be few, but they be mighty.
We hope we’ve managed to make your hunt for the perfect baby name a little easier, thanks to the fine folk who are putting their hands up to lead Australia. Enjoy your election day tomorrow, and don’t forget to vote!
*Oh, and a little footnote: we know not every politician wears glasses and conservative clothing – but these kids are just too cute not to use!
