Fancy a France-y tour? Let Leslie Kimmelman and Sarah McMenemy show you the way.
Everybody Bonjours! by Kimmelman and illustrated by McMenemy is a simple and delightful romp through Paris. The story begins with “When in Paris, everybody bonjours” and as we follow a little girl and her family to the major Parisian attractions we hear “Everybody bonjours!” over and over – “From shores. In stores. On guided tours.”
The rhyming text beautifully captures the little girl’s French experience including the major landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower (“Bonjours high”) and snippets of Parisian life – “They bonjour while sweeping floors. Doing chores. Eating petits fours.”
The charm of this book lies in McMenemy’s superb ink and watercolour illustrations. Clever use of white space make the colourful illustrations seem to pop off the page, giving each a lively and cheerful quality.
Two things to look out for – there is a little mouse that follows the family on their trip and children will enjoy spotting it on each page. There is also a clever use of maps – the inside cover of the book features a stylised map of Parisian landmarks, all of which are visited in the story. Children will enjoy following the little girl’s tour on the map. In addition, there is some detailed, factual information about each of these landmarks at the back of the book for parents.
If you are lucky enough to be travelling to Paris this is the perfect book for introducing pre-schoolers to the sights that await them. If there are no travel plans on the horizon simply enjoy this charming book and dream!
Everybody Bonjours! is available from Borders for $27.95.
