11 days of fun and free family activites at the NGV Kids Summer Festival

NGV Kids Summer Festival 2016

The program of events for the hugely popular NGV Kids Summer Festival have been announced! Packed full of fun creative activities, the festival is a wonderful introduction to the arts and a great way to keep the kids entertained these holidays.

The NGV Kids Summer Festival gives children the chance to meet and create with local designers and artists. They can create their own take-home art pieces or contribute to large-scale public art pieces that will be on display. This year the theme is inspired by the works of Andy Warhol and Ai Wei Wei including their shared love of cats. Awww.

Running over 11 days of non-stop free family events, this festival has quickly become a beloved favourite for Melbourne families. Whether you’re a local or visiting on holiday, there is sure to be something that your children will love in this great line-up of activities.

In the first few days of the festival, children are invited to craft paper flowers to be added to a giant flower mural. Remember, this is an arts festival so kids are encouraged to get as abstract, imaginative, colourful, and creative as possible.

On Australia Day there are live music performances from the Young Australian Broadway Chorus and one-man band Uptown Brown that will get the whole family dancing. I’m excited to take my own little Miss on her first art tour, as special guided tours for children through the NGV Australian art collection will run regularly.

Other activities include making finger puppets, screen printing your own take-home tea towels, cat drawing lessons with illustrator Kat Chadwick and so much more. The NGV Kids Summer Festival runs from Jan 16-26 from 10am-3pm. You can view the full calendar of events at the NGV website.

Kate Murray

Kate was a regular of Melbourne’s music and film scenes, but these days she is on the mum scene. Mother to one adorable little hipster, Kate loves seeking out the latest trends in technology, vintage-style kids clothing, and offbeat kids products. She is often found riding her bike by the Yarra river with baby on back, heading for a good soy latte at the latest kid-friendly cafe. She wants to get there before it becomes cool. So Melbourne.
