Drew Barrymore’s 4yo had two horizontal tantrums for the funniest reasons

Drew Barrymore (who is currently appearing in the Santa Clarita Diet on Netflix) popped up on the talk show circuit and the discussion quickly turned to… tantrums!

Mini mayhem

Appearing on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Drew chatted delightfully about the perils of leaving the house with kids.

She explained that she’d taken her very excited daughters, 4-year-old Olive and 2-year-old Frankie to both Disneyland and Disney World with excellent, yet emotional, results.

“(Disney) was the best experience ever. I just had tears of joy seeing their joy. But, if you’ve ever taken your kids to Disneyland or Disney World, it all ends at some point in mayhem.”

Losing it

When Seth displayed a picture of a horizontal Olive at Disney World (she’s wearing the red dress on this visit), Drew went into great detail about what prompted this fraught moment.

“That is a legitimate picture of my daughter just losing it on the floor,” she explained earnestly.

“In this case, she wanted to chase a duck.”

“Olive was determined to catch it, and in hindsight – you have these revelations as a parent like ‘I should have let her catch it’ because then she either would have (and been satisfied), or she wouldn’t have and then been mad at the duck and not her mom who tried to stop her chasing the bird.”

“I say just let ’em chase it,” Drew advised.

Episode Two

Next, they examined Olive visiting Disneyland (the pic in the shorter frock, again horizontal.)

This episode was the result of going too hard, too much, for too long, according to Drew.

“You’re, like ‘I’m here! Let’s skip the nap and let’s go, go, go!’ You want to maximise it!”

“This is how it always ends for me,” she said, pointing at the photo of Olive.

“They love it, so they lose it!”

When Seth asked her how to ward off these tantrums, Drew had some sage advice (which strangely did not include the handcuffs he’d helpfully suggested.)

“I think you should have 10 consistent tools in your arsenal,” she said. “It’s either the tender loving approach or the ‘I’m very serious’ approach.”

Ultimately, despite the horizontal episodes, Drew said she’d do it all again (and you should too!)

“Take your kids to Disneyland,” she advised. “They love it, so they lose it!”
