Dick Bruna creates Miffy

It’s no secret that I am a huge fan of Miffy – to my eye, the simple, sweet bunny is perfect in every sense. So I was delighted to find a video clip of Dick Bruna at work.

When you see the work that goes into each Miffy illustration, you appreciate that she is not such a ‘simple’ bunny after all. Bruna doesn’t use a ruler, ‘draws’ with a fine paintbrush and has used exactly the same shade of only five colours (yellow, red, blue, green and brown) and three shades (black, white and grey) for decades.

Enjoy more of Bruna’s illustration and graphic design with Dick Bruna, a collection of his work. It’s available from Book Depository for $48.02 (and as a nice touch, it’s shaped in the same neat square as the Miffy books). Book Depository also has a large range of Miffy books, beginning at $8 each, with free delivery to Australia.

Katrina Whelen

Katrina studied planning and design, did the hard yards working in a big office building and then traded it all in for a relaxing (!) life at home with four children. She now fills her time with writing, completing a degree in genetics and taxiing her children around Melbourne to their various sporting commitments (not necessarily in that order).
