“I kiss all my kids!” David Beckham forced to defend lip kiss with daughter

Former soccer star David Beckham has had to defend his parenting approach over a photo he posted last month showing him kissing his five-year-old daughter Harper on the lips. Sadly, he’s not the only celebrity to receive negative backlash for this innocent act either.

A cute father, daughter moment

The father of four posted this sweet photo with the caption ‘Kiss for Daddy’ last month, and before long it had attracted the kind of negative attention that leaves most parents shaking their heads at the world and its ability to sexualise the most innocent displays of affection between a father and his daughter.

Beckham is baffled by people’s reaction

The famous dad has since spoken out about the disappointing reaction to the picture during a Facebook live interview with a Thai TV talk show.

“Having children is the most special thing in the world,” he told the host Woody Milintachinda. “I got actually criticized for kissing my daughter on the lips the other day. I kiss all my kids on the lips.”

Beckham and his wife Victoria also have three other kids – Brooklyn (18), Romeo (14) and Cruz (12). Harper is the couple’s youngest. Despite confessing his open physical affection for all of his kids, Beckham did admit that he no longer kisses his eldest on the lips these days.”Brooklyn’s 18, he might find that a little bit strange,” he said.

“We’re very affectionate with them”

According to Beckham, showing love to their kids is the norm in their household.

“It was how I was brought up and Victoria, and it’s how we are with our children. We want to show our kids love. And we protect them, look after them, support them, and we’re very affectionate with them,” he said.

Unfortunately this isn’t the first time the Beckhams have been criticised for showing affection to their youngest. Victoria Beckham posted a photo of herself kissing Harper on the lips a year ago which also received many negative comments.

A bitter, judgemental world

The Beckhams aren’t the only celebrities being attacked for showing love to their children. Last year, actress Hilary Duff received the same treatment after sharing a photo of her kissing her four-year-old son Luca on the lips. But she was not taking the small-minded comments of strangers lying down and hit back with this excellent post:

“For anyone commenting that a kiss on the lips with my four year old is ‘inappropriate’ go ahead and click unfollow with your warped minds and judgement,” the star wrote on Instagram.

Everyone parents differently, and if they’re weirded out by kissing their own kids on the lips, they don’t have to. But don’t condemn another parent for showing innocent affection to their own little ones. Sometimes we really wonder if the world has indeed gone mad.
