Congratulations! You’re pregnant. Now here’s $2000 to buy some new clothes.
It sounds like a joke, but one American company is making this offer a reality with their “Haute Mama” bonus.
Domo, a business data company in Utah, USA, provides their pregnant employees with $2000 in gift certificates to spend on maternity clothes at Nordstrom, A Pea in the Pod or ASOS. All of these stores are popular shopping hot spots in the USA, but if the expectant mother doesn’t like any of these stores, the company will make alternative arrangements.
“It can be a very challenging time (for women),” Cathy Donahoe, Domo’s vice president of human resources, tells TODAY.
“The goal is to help them feel good, to be able to go, ‘It’s not one more thing I have to worry about’.”
The maternity bonus allows employees to splurge on special items they might not otherwise buy for themselves and to ensure they feel comfortable at work.
In addition to the $2000 clothing bonus, Domo also supplies all employees with a $1000 baby bonus plus maternity and paternity leave.
And, it gets better. The $2000 clothing bonus is not a one-time thing. Get pregnant again and you will receive another $2000.
“Clothes go out of style, things change,” Donahue explains.
Donahue says that so far the response to the $2000 “Haute Mama” bonus has been very positive. Some half a dozen women have taken advantage of the offer in the past year and they just love it.
I know what you’re thinking. And we’ve already checked. Domo is only based in the United States at this stage and no, they are not planning to expand into Australia.
But we’ll be sure to let you know if they do.
