If there was an award for the best uncle, radio host Andy Lee would have to be a frontrunner after writing a children’s book for his nephew’s first birthday.
We all love to watch the fatherhood antics of his comedy partner, Hamish Blake, and now Andy shows us you don’t have to be a parent to give a child a special place in your heart.
The book, five months in the making is called Do Not Open This Book, and is available for purchase across Australia.
In true Hamish and Andy style, the oh-so-sweet moment Andy unveiled the book to his sister Alex and his nephew George (aka little-G) was captured on video.
The video starts with Andy introducing his sister and nephew and explaining why he chose to write the book.
“I really wanted to get him something special for his birthday so five months before he turned one, I started making a book for him,” Andy says.
He says he enlisted the help of children’s illustrator Heath McKenzie to complete his special gift.
“The only thing left to do was to surprise my sister and little-G on his first birthday,” Andy says.
The video cuts to Hamish, who is waiting in a car near a bookstore, to explain what’s about to happen.
“Operation surprise sister with bespoke children’s book for nephew’s/son’s first birthday whilst masquerading as breakfast catch-up – name TBC (to be confirmed) – is a go,” Hamish says.
We then see Andy holding George and walking with Alex towards a cafe when he ushers them into a book shop, explaining there is a book he wants to buy the birthday boy.
Alex seems near to tears after Andy points out the book and explains he wrote it.
Adorable George seems just as speechless when Hamish enters with a microphone to get his reaction.
But after the video was posted on the radio duo’s Facebook page, Alex found words to express her gratitude in the comments along with a gorgeous photo of her reading the book to George.
“It’s official – I’m the most spoilt sister on the planet,” Alex posted.
“I have two brothers who are generous and talented and one of them just WROTE A BOOK for Georgie Boy’s first birthday.
“I’m actually still pinching myself. And the icing on the birthday cake was that, unbeknownst to Andy, he chose my favourite kid’s illustrator, Heath McKenzie to bring his idea to life.
“George clearly loves it, and if you ignore the warnings to not open the book, I hope you enjoy it too.”
