This Christmas you need Snow

Of course, it’s ridiculous to associate the festive season with snow in Australia. And yet, so many Christmas traditions – from carols and decorations to the food we eat – are suited to a much chillier climate. You may be sweating over the roast turkey on Christmas Day but we have just the book to cool things down.

Snow, a version of Walter de la Mare’s classic poem, has been illustrated by Carolina Rabei and the result is superb.

Rabei’s restricted colour palette – shades of greys and browns with a splash of red – complement de la Mare’s simple but rich prose –

“Whispering, rustling / Through the air / On sill and stone / Roof — everywhere.”

Although de la Mare’s poem is simply about the wonder of snow, Rabei’s exquisite illustrations turn his words into a celebration of a northern hemisphere Christmas. All of the activities and traditions associated with a wintery festive season – from hanging stockings by the fire and building a snowman to tobogganing and Father Christmas steering his sleigh through falling snowflakes are included, making this a perfect Christmas book.

Find Snow online at Readings, which delivers free within Australia. If you hurry, you can still get this book in time for Christmas.
