I’ve been to, and hosted, quite a number of children’s birthday parties. No matter how fabulous the party entertainment, how scrumptious the food, how sparkling the company, kids are invariably champing at the bit to rip into their party bags – apparently you can’t have too much food colouring and sugar in one afternoon!
So, if the party bag is the ‘take home message’, can it be more earth friendly whilst still holding cred with a six year old?
Yes! It’s easy. Say ‘no’ to plastic party bags and bits of plastic junk to fill them and ‘yes’ to these very cute and reusable, recycled creations from Ethical Party Bags. If recycled juice boxes aren’t your thing, there are also sweet jute drawstring bags and paper bags made from recycled exam papers.
Fill them with fair-trade toys such as spinning tops, trinket boxes or pencils – all available from Ethical Party Bags – and you’ll have a green party bag that still thrills little guests. Don’t forget the organic chocolate!
Another online retailer celebrating all things earth-friendly, Eco My Party, have the most adorable willow twig stars. Perfect for decorating a fairy party, guests could also embellish their own star wand as a take home treat. Although they don’t ship to Australia (probably a good thing considering the carbon footprint!), the stars may inspire some ideas for a different take on the usual sparkly pink fairy affair.
Ethical Party Bags ships to Australia by arrangement. Juice box bags are £5 each. Alternatively, check out some of the toys available at Oxfam, including old favourites such as hacky sacks and sweet wooden doll whistles.
