Decorating boys rooms can be tricky. Little boys’ rooms are often heavy on the transport theme and teenage boys have hobbies, music and sport to influence their décor but what about the ‘in-betweens’?
I have a five-year-old and a six-year-old boy who share a room and I must admit it is in decorating limbo. The denim blue and red colour scheme still works but they have outgrown many of the ‘finishing touches’. Finding little extras for boys’ rooms that are edgy, appealing to kids and also practical isn’t easy.
Swedish design company, Our Children’s Gorilla, specialise in creating peculiar and unusual pieces that are perfectly pitched at five-year-olds. My boys would go crazy for the Skullcave, a cubby house just right for some private time or as a space to share with a friend.
The Skullcave is perfect for their age group. They most definitely enjoy playing in cubbies but according to the boys, the Thomas pop-up play tent belonging to my preschooler is "for babies".
The Skullcave is lightweight, made of durable sensaten, portable and is simply rolled up to store. I like the fact that it can be rolled as I’m one of those people that look like they are having a wrestle with a crocodile when folding down those pop-up things that never seem to pack away as they are supposed to.
The Skullcave is available from Huset for US$225. We have featured products from Huset before, notably their beautiful tree shaped coat racks. At that time Huset did not ship outside the United States but have since expanded their service and will now ship internationally.
