Each year I go to the effort of taking one terrific photo of my kids that is sent to all the aunts, uncles, grandparents and friends living interstate and overseas. My definition of ‘terrific’ is having all four kids looking roughly in the same direction. This is no mean feat.
Enter camera costumes. For photographers wanting babies and kids to look at the camera, these simple accessories are genius.
There are dozens of fun designs at Etsy’s Camera Creatures – a reindeer would be a good festive choice but the crab and octopus are also eye-catching. Each Creature stretches to fit a variety of lens sizes and they all contain a squeaker, for attention-grabbing sound effects! Handmade Camera Creatures on Etsy are US$15 to US$19 each and can be shipped to Australia. They are also available directly from Camera Creatures (same concept however these creatures are commercially made) for US$24.99.
Similarily, Etsy’s Mandee Franee Designs has a collection of crazy and colourful creatures that kids will love and you’ll also find the loveable Elmo at LensFriends (below), a fabulous floral arrangement at Pickleberry Props (shown at bottom) and feathered friends at Pitter Pat Heart.
Although not as cute as the camera costumes, the checkerboard Shutter Buddy is by all accounts irresistible to babies. Anyone who has ‘read’ a black and white picture or pattern book to a baby knows that the stark contrast of black and white does engage little eyes. Working on that principle, the Shutter Buddy lens surround is easy to attach and fits almost any digital camera. It’s available from Urban Baby for $24.95.
