Cake pops – cooler than cupcakes

Are you over cupcakes? I don’t mean eating them – no one would tire of that – I mean decorating them. If you’ve joined the ranks of people who are no longer that impressed by an artfully iced cupcake, turn your attention to the newest sweet treat, the cake pop.

Cake pops are balls of cake crumbs mixed with icing which are then placed on a lollipop stick and iced and decorated (kids will love them for the high icing-to-cake ratio alone). The queen of the cake pop is Angie Dudley, whose blog Bakerella is hallowed territory for baking fans.

Dudley’s cake pop designs are truly extraordinary and almost look too good to eat (emphasis on the ‘almost’!). From well known characters such as Mr Potatohead, Elmo and Hello Kitty to bees, bunnies, chicks and flowers, Dudley can turn practically anything into a cake pop – the intricate cake pop burgers and popcorn tubs are edible works of art.
