If you’ve already had fun in the garden, perhaps it’s time for some ponding?
Last year we introduced you to the educational (and thoroughly lovely) DVD and flashcard set, In the Garden. The designers behind In the Garden, Sonia Orchard and Martine Corompt, have recently released the next nature installment, By the Pond.
Like the garden DVD, By the Pond is a musical animation about the animals and plants that live in and around an Australian pond. Some of the animals included are commonly found, such as ducks, tadpoles and frogs, while spotting others such as the platypus, would constitute a very special pond visit indeed.
The DVD is accompanied by eighteen flashcards that include information, activities and questions about each plant and animal, designed to encourage parents (or teachers) to provide a commentary to the animation.
As with In the Garden, the beauty of the pond DVD is the realistic representation of what an Australian waterway looks like. From the mosquitoes and a discarded bottle at the bottom of a pond to reeds, wading birds and the fallen logs that provide valuable habitat for water creatures, the DVD shows the intricacies of pond (or creek) life.
