I find that kids are either in the ‘thrill-seeker’ category or they are absolutely not. One of my sons is a definite thrill-seeker and will always ask to for the scariest movies, books and experiences. He once said to me (after a terrifying bit in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland) “It’s scary Mum, but I like the way it makes my heart feel!” – a five-year-old’s first taste of the adrenalin pumping perhaps?!
If you have a child who likes to flirt with the dark, monsters and all things toe-curling, grab a copy of Ed Vere’s latest book, Bedtime for Monsters.
It’s the story of a monster who is looking for a bedtime snack. You quickly learns that the snack the monster is looking for is you! With each page, the monster gets closer and closer – his tummy rumbles, he wonders if he has packed his knife and fork, the stairs creak and the monster licks his lips as he reaches for your bedroom door…
I don’t normally give away the ending of a story but in this case, parents can rest assured that all this monster wants is a gigantic goodnight kiss!
The illustrations are fun – the goofy looking monster takes the edge off the text but the highlight is the page-by-page suspense. Check out the video clip below where Lee Ingleby of Cbeebees reads Bedtime for Monsters.
