Do you know someone little who loves to snuggle in bed with their bear? This delightful book is a perfect bedtime read with a lot of laughs and an ending of sleepy cuddles.
Australian author and illustrator Jonathan Bentley has created a wonderfully interactive book that is just made fur bedtime. See what I did there?
As a boy readies himself for bed, he realises that he cannot find his bear anywhere – so he asks Where is Bear? As the boy searches, we see a great bear always just out of his sight. Children are encouraged to point out the bear while the boy’s misguided searching fuels lots of giggles. There is a lovely twist at the end that involves a big bear, a little bear, and lots of bedtime cuddles, but I won’t give any spoilers here.
We have seen Jonathan’s gorgeous illustrations before in Have You Seen Duck? and The Lilac Ladies, but in Where is Bear? he steps up to be both author and illustrator and the results are charming. Full spreads of pencil and watercolour create vibrant images that need minimal text. The true delight of this book is the way text and pictures work together to create a full story that is both engaging and interactive. To me, pictures and words working together so that the story needs both to be understood is exactly what good picture books are all about. Jonathan has nailed it and I look forward to seeing his next gem.
