Babyology explores Sea Island

The United States is such a diverse country with a distinctly different atmosphere depending on where you are.

Visit the West Coast and the feeling is likely to be laid back, especially if you’re in sunny California. If you’re on the East Coast, travelling to places such as New York and Washington, the tone can be a little more serious and the pace a bit more frantic.

Then if you venture down south, you’re likely to experience the charm and elegance of Southern hospitality. Probably one of the more traditional areas of the US, southerners pride themselves on their manners and style.

Looking for somewhere you and your family will receive a warm welcome? Sea Island, Georgia, in Atlanta, is the place to be. This old-world charmer will transport you back to a genteel time before life got so busy.

And Sea Island Resort is an amazing example of that. While it’s not mandatory to pack your pearls and navy blazers, you’ll definitely know you’re somewhere pretty special.

Sea Island Resort sits on the magnificent Atlantic Ocean and the dramatic coastline is something else. The resort has miles of private beach to explore, perfect for horseback riding, sailing or fishing.

There’s no casual, laid back policy here when it come to the service you’ll receive, it’s seriously five star. But that’s not the only thing that sets it apart; we’re seriously charmed by the family activities on offer.

We knew we had discovered something truly unique when we saw the schedule for the posh tot guests… it’s a little, ahem, out of the ordinary!

For five-to-twelve-year-olds, there’s the Shooting School. The Air Rifle Bull’s-eye Hour teaches the art of clay target shooting, as well as shooting techniques and gun safety. It’s hugely popular and definitely something that’s not on every Kids Club activity list!

There’s also a state-of-the-art children’s centre that offers tailored age-appropriate programs. There’s Camp Cloister, for three-to-twelve-year-olds, with activities that centre around a different theme each day, such as pirates, frogs, fish or birds. Then there’s Club Sea Island, exclusive to the nine-to-twelve-year-old-set, where they get to do more adventurous stuff, such as ocean kayaking.

For the grown-ups there’s plenty to keep you busy as well. There’s the golf club, with two eighteen-hole golf courses and the Golf Learning Centre, with three of the staff making Golf Digest‘s “America’s 50 Greatest Teachers” list. Then there’s the tennis centre and beach club, which has three pools, a movie theatre and oceanfront dining.

Speaking of dining – there are a few options to keep everyone sated. The food, as you’d expect for a resort of this calibre, is a highlight, with the resort developing a strong partnership with local farmers, butchers, fishermen and artisans so that only the freshest regional ingredients are brought to the plate.

There’s casual dining with the Beach Club, which has a snack bar, ice-cream parlour, candy shop and Big George’s – described as a classic Southern Seafood House. Then there’s club-style ambience at the River Bar and the Oak Room, with both overlooking the water. Then the Forbes Five-Star Georgian Room has “refined Southern” cuisine, while Cost & Alison is renowned for its succulent wet and dry-aged beef and magnificent views of the Plantation Course’s eighteenth hole.

To work it all off, there’s a fully equipped fitness centre, and even this seems to be more genteel than your usual gym set-up, as you can even take ballroom dancing classes! Or take it easy and enjoy the day spa. There are twenty-three treatment rooms, saunas, steam rooms and pools to keep you occupied all day. Don’t forget to ask about the signature Sea Island Collection of products.

Now, the only thing left to decide on is your accommodation. There’s a variety of styles available – The Cloister at Sea Island is made up of rooms that overlook the river and ocean while The Lodge rooms have views of the fairways and the Sea Island Cottages are great for large families.

Whatever accommodation style you choose, odds are it’s going to be just like the rest of this resort – picture perfect.
