Remember those halcyon days of Woodstock, where the girls wore flowers in their hair and sometimes the boys did too? Nup, me neither. But no need to get all bummed out, cats. Heavenly Creatures is bringing the hippie vibe back for kids this summer!
Designers Heidi Weber and Kelly Duckworth are getting their groovy on with a very colourful Woodstock-inspired kids’ fashion collection for Spring Summer 2012-2013 that will knock your socks off. Of course, we all know hippies don’t wear socks, but take a look at the collection and I think you’ll know what I mean.
I had a sneak preview of their Woodland Folk Festival range at Heavenly Creatures’ Melbourne studio earlier this month and darn it, those talented twosome have stolen my heart (and my kids’ summer clothing budget) away again with their preternatural design ways!
Expect beautiful dresses, so many beautiful dresses, for the girls this summer. I had my four-year-old daughter in tow and she literally gasped in delight when she got a glimpse of the aptly named Piece of My Heart Tutu dress. She squeezed my hand and whispered “Mummy, can I pleeease have that dress” when she saw the black and white stripped version but it also comes in eye-catching red and white (above). Like many Heavenly Creatures’ designs, it’s deceptively tougher than it looks and is designed to handle everything except perhaps the roughest play.
There’s a trio of vintage fabric-trimmed dresses – lemon sorbet, strawberry fields and blue haze – that are so hippie, it hurts. The fruit versions have an unexpected flocked fabric that just ramps up the sweetness factor. Vintage fabrics in all sorts of delightfully clashing combinations also appear in the rainbows skirts, while a lace doily thrifted from a church op shop provides the pattern for the matching (and very pretty) Prudence Peasant tops. Got a not-so girly-girl on your hand? Let me introduce you to the Hey Jude denim skirt (below), the epitome of 70s hippie-inspired chic.
Heidi and Kelly also release a signature tutu with every collection and this one, the White Rabbit (above right), with its genuine vintage lace will take your breathe away. It’d certainly be my choice for a flower girl outfit if I was planning a spring wedding. You’re also going to want the Gypsy Sun pettidress, with its dainty lace hem. You can’t see it, but there’s a neat mini row of pearl buttons at the back that deliver another knock-out punch of pretty that goes just so with the bright yellow hue.
There’s also a host of festival inspired tanks and tees for boys and girls – many in unisex designs. The Swing Low terry shorts, while created with boys in mind, can be commandeered for the girls too. And the Hendrix suede vest? Well, it’s so cool, every kid should have one.
If you don’t yet know Heavenly Creatures, believe me when I tell you they are made from beautiful quality cottons and fabrics that wash and wash and wash, and keep on looking superb. You’ll be handing them down the family ranks for all the kids to wear, and quite possibly squirrelling some favourites away for when your kids have kids. I know I have!
You can find a list of local stockists at Heavenly Creatures, or visit their own online shop. The new Summer 2013 collection will be in stores later this year – look out for it sometime around August. In the meantime, you can revisit our post on the current Paris winter collection from Heavenly Creatures, available to buy now. Peace out.
