As a teacher, I like to expose my students to as many different concepts about print as I can, and the UK’s Anorak magazine has me totally buzzing with excitement. There’s nothing like something out of the ordinary to enthuse even the most reluctant readers, so I can hardly wait to get my hands on a copy, available exclusively in Australia from Monkeytail and Wellington.
The artwork is thrilling, simply oozing collectability. You won’t find these magazines scrupulously archived in my house though – they’re made to be read again and again, with wonderful stories, cartoons, articles and procedure texts on how to make things. All this against a backdrop of impeccable aesthetics which pop from the page and beg to be shared around the whole family.
As a child I had a Coles Picture Book, and Anorak Magazine feels like a modernised version of those old-fashioned annuals children used to have – a treasure trove of things to read about, with a surprise on every page. Anorak will become part of your child’s early memories, just as my Coles Picture Book remains a part of mine.
Join the inevitable line-up for the local release of this unique publication. It will be priced at $8 to $10 plus shipping for the UK Summer ’09 edition and is due this week at Monkeytail and Wellington.
