Welcome baby Christoph!

Christina Penton’s baby Christoph was keen to meet his mum sooner rather than later, arriving 30 minutes into a Fort Lauderdale to Dallas/Fort Worth flight. When the crew realised Christina was in labour, the flight was quickly diverted to New Orleans, but bub could not wait and she gave birth, mid-flight, just before they landed.

After her baby’s safe delivery, the proud mum asked the people in the seats behind her to take some video of the fresh arrival, as she cradled the tiny boy in her arms.

Amazed fellow passenger Shelley Hedgecock Starks complied, leaning over the seat in front of her to capture this surprised mum and her new son as an attending doctor ties off the umbilical cord. In the footage, Christoph’s older sister sits, quietly stunned in the seat beside her mum. Christina can be seen shaking her head as she strokes her little boy, who seems amazingly calm and content.

“What’s his name”, the doctor asks.

“Christoph!” Christina says happily and people in the seats around them can’t help but, “Awwwww!”

“We just experienced the birth of a baby in the seat in front of us on our flight and had to do an emergency landing in New Orleans, we visited with the doctor that delivered the baby while waiting to get on our flight,” Shelley captioned the Facebook clip of tiny Christoph Lezcano’s first few minutes of life.

The little boy was born, happy and healthy, weighing in at just over 3 kilograms.

All’s well that ends well

If you’re wondering why Christina was even on this flight, it seems that airlines have varying rules about flying in the late stages of pregnancy.

Spirit Airlines confirms that “women in their 8th month of pregnancy are urged to obtain an examination from her physician shortly before to confirm it is safe for them to travel” on their website.

USA today reports that Christina “did not have complications with her other pregnancies so she wasn’t worried about flying at 36 weeks.”

Once airborne, however, things started to take a turn for the… birth!

“Within 10, 15 minutes of takeoff I felt like something was not fine,” Christina said. Contractions were five minutes apart, then four minutes apart, then every three minutes. They’d been in the air for just under an hour when her waters broke and ten minutes later, baby Christoph was born.

“It went really, really quick,” this amazing mum said, noting that her little boy had his own birth plan and was not prepared to wait.

“This is what he wanted,” Christina said during a news conference, nodding at the baby on her lap. “We were just all along for the ride, I think.”

Free flights for life

In celebration of his unusual arrival, Spirit Airlines have gifted baby Christoph and family free flights for life.

“A baby being born during a flight is very rare,” Spirit Airlines spokesman, Paul Berry.

“Our flight attendants are trained to handle medical emergencies in flight and they have access to doctors on the ground via inflight communication. In this case we were fortunate to also have a pediatrician on board who brought even more care and comfort to the situation,” Paul explained.

Christina said her surprise birth attendants did a beautiful job looking after her.

“They helped make what could have been a terrible situation as good as it could possibly be.”

Welcome to the world, baby Christoph!
