Archie is no ordinary sloth and that is what makes him brilliant

Archie - no Ordinary Sloth by Heath McKenzie

Archie is an energetic sloth that loves to dance and juggle and groove about – pretty unusual for a sloth. Through this beautiful book by Australian Hugh McKenzie we learn that those same traits that make us different can also make us brilliant.

At the heart of this book is an adorable character called Archie – a sloth that doesn’t like to sloth about. His story is brought to life with really striking illustrations that don’t just depict the scene, but also capture the mood of the story. The palette of blues that make the backdrop of the sloth’s jungle home makes it seem so serene and relaxing you can understand why all the sloths just want to drape themselves across the branches and snooze.

The characters in this story are vibrant and bizarre. Feeling out of place from his sloth tribe, Archie heads out on his own and forms a truly unusual group of friends including a giraffe with a short neck, a hippo that loves to climb trees, and a hyena without a sense of humour. You’d think that would be enough story for a children’s book but Hugh continues to delight with further twists in the tale and a heroic finale. I won’t drop any spoilers, but you should definitely grab yourself a copy.
