What did you gobble down the moment your precious newborn popped out? Soft cheese? Sushi? Runny eggs?

Inspired by this glorious image of a mum in hospital right after labour, Kinderling Kids Radio asked some of their readers what their first post-birth meal of choice.

Love this pic! ??? What was the first thing you ate after giving birth?

Fancy schmancy

One mum sounds like she’s living the LIFE, saying: “After my private births I enjoyed a stunning steak dinner and fancy chocolate dessert. After my home birth my husband got me a sausage roll. Bit of a let down there!”

Except for that last bit. A sausage roll after expecting a steak dinner is a MASSIVE letdown.

The boring side

Sometimes you don’t have much of a choice but to inhale whatever the hospital’s got ready for you.

Think a plain old bowl of cornflakes, or a ham and cheese sanga, even run-of-the-mill cheese and crackers.

“They brought me a breakfast tray – cold weet-bix have never tasted better!” another mum shared.

Though there are moments in life where simpler is better.

Another mum added: “I had the best cup of tea of my whole life ☕️”

Takeaway guilty pleasures

KFC, Subway, Hungry Jacks and McDonald’s seem to run a rip-roaring trade post-pregnancy. Preferred menu items include apple pie, McFlurries, soft serve, pancakes, hash browns and nuggets.

“Maccas ice cream,” said a satisfied mum. “And I got most people who were visiting us in the first few days to bring me one as well.”

Even while having contractions, as this mum revealed: “Last time I had a zinger and while I was having contractions I had a sweet chilli twister ? I’m obsessed. Trying not to eat it anymore though.”

Sweet treats

For those ladies with gestational diabetes, sugar’s the first thing on the mind! Cornflakes sprinkled with sugar is one commenter’s choice. And this mum also jumped straight back on the sugar train. “Cupcakes (I had gestational diabetes) and Maggie Beer Pate,” she shared.

Another said she chose fresh banana bread, hot choccie and a bowl of passion fruit yoghurt. Bread and butter pudding also gets a mention.

Antipasto, please!

Blue cheese, D’affinois, brie, ham and salami are all common foods that are denied for nine months and incredibly missed. So it makes sense they’re high on the list.

“Salami and tomato roll… Was craving salami for months,” this mum recalled.

Another added: “Boring cornflakes as it was 7am. BUT there was a cheese platter dessert option at the hospital where I had my first. I had those cheeses four nights in a row.”

Last but not least – sushi

Sushi and sashimi are super popular choices, especially for this mama who was desperate for her raw-fish fill.

“Sushi! So much sushi 🙂 Anyone who came to visit while I was in hospital had to bring me salmon and avocado sushi rolls ?”
