An alphabet of play

New York collage artist Ida Pearle has created an ABC book to treasure. A Child’s Day: An Alphabet of Play is an ABC of verbs. From ‘act’ to ‘zoom’ with dancing, whistling and more in between, Pearle’s brightly coloured paper collages capture the motion of children at play.

The illustrations represent children all over the world and although no facial features are drawn, each collage is full of expression and movement. There is always room for more than one ABC book in a child’s library and it’s rare to find one that is about things we do, as opposed to objects. Children will identify with this delightful book, and parents will appreciate the stunning collages.

A Child’s Day is available in Australia from Fishpond for $19.95.

Katrina Whelen

Katrina studied planning and design, did the hard yards working in a big office building and then traded it all in for a relaxing (!) life at home with four children. She now fills her time with writing, completing a degree in genetics and taxiing her children around Melbourne to their various sporting commitments (not necessarily in that order).
