Since finding Alice Melvin’s website, I’ve done a bit of googling and discovered she’s quite the prolific artist! Her book An A to Z Treasure Hunt (£6.99) is printed by the Tate Gallery in London and it’s no ordinary alphabet book; it encourages the child to interact with the text through craft activities like finding orange stickers to affix to the page.
Another charming book of Melvin’s, Nonsense Collective Nouns (£12 with a choice of covers), inspires children to make up their own nouns. I’d like to use this book as a springboard for my literacy lessons on collective nouns.
Alice Melvin’s work also includes silk-screen prints for £40 to £60, plus a teeny £3 to £5 shipping charge per order. I love her slightly ornate, whimsical style and muted colours, and I hope her profile continues to skyrocket.
