A whole new way to look at wallpaper by Payton Turner

One of my favourite scenes from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is the lickable wallpaper – apart from the crazy concept, I actually like the fruity pattern of the wallpaper!

Payton Turner’s wallpaper designs caught my eye because they reminded me of Willy Wonka’s fruit patterns and it turns out her designs are as magical as Wonka’s – no, they’re not flavoured but they are made up of thousands of stickers!

The ‘wallpaper’ you see is not actually wallpaper but carefully composed sticker collages and patterns. Incredible!

Look closely at each design and you’ll see all sorts of ordinary stickers from cars and butterflies to tennis balls and keyboards, each picked for their shape and colour.

For the record, Turner has designed a range of traditional wallpapers, under the label Flat Vernacular. The designs are every bit as lovely as her sticker compositions (although not quite as quirky!). Expect sixties-inspired florals, traditional patterns with a kitsch twist (Toile de Derby) and stunning Deco geometrics. At this point, I’ll admit to a designer-crush – I think Turner’s work is simply perfect and I wish I had some Flat Vernacular on my walls.

For old-time sake, check out Willy Wonka’s lickable wallpaper below!

Katrina studied planning and design, did the hard yards working in a big office building and then traded it all in for a relaxing (!) life at home with four children. She now fills her time with writing, completing a degree in genetics and taxiing her children around Melbourne to their various sporting commitments (not necessarily in that order).
