A loveliness of ladybirds and a quiver of cobras

collective nouns

I professed my love for collective nouns earlier this year. My love just got deeper, much deeper.

Check out Woop Studios. The designers’ focus is best summed up with a direct quote – “United by a love of graphic design, words and images they founded Woop to bring a unique and exciting angle to the fascinating world of collective nouns”. Who knew there was so much love for collective nouns out there?!

On offer are two alphabets, both presented as prints of individual letters. The first alphabet is for collective nouns – a stand of flamingos, a cloud of grasshoppers and so on, and the second for collective terms – an aurora of polar bears, a bale of turtles, a loveliness of ladybirds and so forth. The nouns are poetic. The artwork is magnificent. The challenge is in choosing!

I like the fact that the designers are upfront about their desire for world domination in collective nouns – “Our aim is to be “the definitive website” for people with a fascination for collective nouns and who enjoy words, images and learning”. I don’t think anyone will challenge that – their work is beautiful.

Unframed prints range from £69 to £169, depending on size. Woop Studios ship unframed prints internationally.

Katrina Whelen

Katrina studied planning and design, did the hard yards working in a big office building and then traded it all in for a relaxing (!) life at home with four children. She now fills her time with writing, completing a degree in genetics and taxiing her children around Melbourne to their various sporting commitments (not necessarily in that order).
