Wandering around the local shopping centre amid aisles of pink and purple or navy and khaki always leaves me wishing for something amazing for my kids to wear. Very little seems fresh, and even less seems exciting. That’s why we’re ever so grateful to have A Little Pocket.
A Little Pocket is an Australian designer of edgy, contemporary yet comfortable clothes for kids aged two to 10. Actually, of all the adjectives that come to mind, ‘futuristic’ is the most apt.
Up until three short years ago, designer Laura Natale was doing all the sewing at home, but when it became impossible to keep up with the abundance of orders, she sought out a professional manufacturer in her native Melbourne. With six collections under its belt, A Little Pocket is still designed and made locally.
A Little Pocket’s latest collection, Creatures of the Night, is all bright abstract patterns, mixed fabrics and fabric treatments, and a spirit that’s a little bit impish. As a mother of two boys, I so appreciate that the boys’ range isn’t all trucks and cars in blue and only blue. Boys can choose from amazing bottoms like black and white checked harem pants ($44.90), and brightly patterned tees ($39.90) with pockets whose placement is a bit off, and completely perfect.
The same harem pants in a colourful pink paisley and diamonds print ($44.90) appear in the girls’ collection, and there are also some wonderful dresses, like the Home Dress ($44.90) which is covered in a pattern of San Francisco’s painted houses, or the floral red dress with shocking pink patch pockets.
Like any high fashion collection, if you take away the make-up and edgy styling, you’re left with amazing quality, unique clothes. Mix the bleach-distressed denim shorts ($49.90) with a grey tee and sneakers, or the pink floral Gwen Dress ($59.90) with some jelly sandals and you’ve got adorable outfits that are hip, but not too out there. Unless out there is your kids’ thing, in which case go for the yellow and pink bob wig and tropical bird inspired eye make-up.
