The first thing you’ll notice about this stunning app is the artwork. No doubt the first thing your toddler will notice is the planes, cars, motorbikes, ships, rockets, hot air balloons and all sorts of other things that ‘go’.
The I Learn with Transportation app, created by the Dada Company, introduces children to sounds, words, colors, shapes, numbers and environments (such as land, sea, air and space). The app, available for iPhone and iPad, is presented in both English and Spanish.
I love Sergio Alfonso’s illustrations – it’s Richard Scarry meets Bob Staake with some punchy colour thrown in. The animation is very nicely done – there’s layering and three dimensional effects while still maintaining a flat, cartoon-like quality. Given the plethora of apps available for children, they have to have something special to stand out and Alfonso’s drawings make this app rise above others.
I love this app for the artwork alone but kids will love it for the sound effects. Apart from a very jolly soundtrack and the use of children’s voices, the touch responsive sounds are good fun – create a transport din with trucks, cars and bikes all honking, tooting and ringing bells at the same time (note that twenty-one means of transportation are included in the app, so there is a lot of potential for noise!).
Although the app is recommended for children aged four years and over, kids from as young as two will enjoy it – the sections on sounds, colours, words and shapes are simple enough for toddlers. I Learn with Transportation is available from iTunes for $2.99.
