To all the kids sick of having their toes cooped up in socks and sneakers and boots all winter, sandals weather is almost upon us, and little toes can finally wiggle free! We’ve found some of the cutest, most stylish, not to mention sturdy sandals for kids.
If summer holidays had a uniform (and we’re glad they don’t), Saltwater sandals would be the required footwear. They come in a rainbow of colours like lavender patent leather ($69), turquoise or shiny gold, and they go with everything. Bonus: the super soft leather stretches and moulds to the foot with each wear until your Saltwaters start to feel like heavenly slippers.
We love that we can have our Plaes in summer too, with the new Plae Sam Sandal ($89.95). They’ve got the support and comfort of a normal Plae sneaker, but the airflow of a sandal. The lining is super soft and seam-free, which means no blisters.
We Are All
We Are All is a gorgeous new Australian kids fashion brand. There are just two sandals in the collection so far, but the Sunday Sandals ($59.95) are super versatile – perfect for summer dressing up, or for playing at the park.
Bobux makes some of the cutest pre-walker and toddler shoes, and the sturdy yet adorable Roamer sandals ($85) in chocolate brown or navy are great for developing feet. The straps give kids good ankle support, and the lining is super soft leather which means two things: it’s gentle on delicate skin, and no more stinky plastic shoes.
We’ll admit it, we’re as much suckers for glitter as a four-year-old might be. That’s why we love Vila Australia’s Fantasy Series sandals ($89). There are pink leather sandals ($89) with pink glitter, purple leather sandals with purple glitter…you get the picture. All that’s missing is a fluffy Elsa dress, but we dare you to find a little girl these days who doesn’t have at least one of those hanging in her closet.
Skeanie rainboots are a good, affordable wet weather option, and the same goes for the brand’s summer footwear. Leather sandals ($49.95) for girls are on the dressy side, and come in colours like rainbow, white or silver. There are also two variations of the All Terrain Sandals ($49.95) – one navy, one pink – for kids who are a little more intrepid.
Australian makers of handmade shoes, Chook Leaf, has lovely sandals this season. The leather straps of the red Jubilee sandal ($89) interlock to form a keyhole in the front – there’s something about these shoes that reminds us of Mecury’s winged sandals. With kids, that idea isn’t too far off. Sometimes they disappear so quickly, you’d swear they’d flown away.
Natives aren’t sandals per se, but they’ve got holes, and my kids spend the entire season in them, so they get an honourable mention. They come in solids ($59.95), colour-blocks and graphic prints, so there’s something for every kid and every summer outfit.
