You don’t need to be an Earth Mother to want to go back to nature when it comes to caring for your baby’s skin. The supple, soft skin of a newborn needs a tender touch, from tip to toe, so we’ve curated a list of our favourite natural and organic products for baby. We’ve also included a couple of great natural cleaning options for the home that won’t irritate baby’s skin or senses.
We’re incredibly lucky that we live in an era where amazing, natural skincare products for babies are readily available. It’s a return to good, old-fashioned methods of keeping babies’ skin protected and moisturised, the natural way.
If there’s one thing that needs to be as close to nature as possible, it’s baby wipes. They’re being used on the most sensitive baby areas, so WaterWipes are an obvious option, because they’re 99.9 per cent purified water. It’s pretty much like using a cloth soaked in water, but much more convenient. especially when you’re away from the house. If you remember that a newborn’s skin is five times thinner than an adult’s, it’s easy to see why using a natural product is important. And these natural wipes will hopefully keep nasty nappy rash at bay.
A blend of natural, essential oils is a rather handy addition to the nursery. This delicious Organic Baby Calming Oil can be used to soothe baby’s skin, and is a beautiful way to introduce massage during the bedtime routine. It can even be used on your baby’s scalp to help with cradle cap. The organic, sweet almond oil and grape seed oil is scented with pure lavender and chamomile essentials oils – heavenly!
Prevention is better than cure when it comes to babies’ skin, so having a good barrier cream on hand for nappy changes is a must. Nature’s Child Bottom Balm can be used with both cloth and disposable nappies and is packed full of organic goodies, in a beeswax base. And the proof is in the pudding with this product, which tends to sell out as soon as it’s restocked!
Australian summers are harsh, but the sun doesn’t have to be blaring for there to be a risk of sunburn. Made for Australian and New Zealand conditions, Babu Organic Baby Sunscreen boasts an SPF of 30+ and is delicate on young skin. It smells amazing (think coconut oil, jojoba, evening primrose oil and papaya) and won’t leave baby’s skin feeling greasy.
While it’s perfectly fine to wash newborns with nothing but water, if you need a little something extra after a particularly messy day, you want it to be all natural. We’ve previously told you about Bebe Nacre breastfeeding shells (for mums) – and Hi Baby also have an amazing range of skincare products aimed just at little ones. Even better, they package them all up into one handy Baby Bath Time pack. It includes a body wash, a body lotion, a talc-free baby powder and the ever-necessary Healing and Nourishing Bottom Balm.
Little Innoscents Organic Hair and Body Wash is a double duty option, which can be used on the whole body to get baby squeaky-clean. This spearmint, sweet orange and lavender gel is also fine to use on babies with eczema and skin issues.
If you’re after a natural cure-all that can be tossed into your bag, it’s hard to go past Lucas’ Papaw Ointment, which can be used on anything from nappy rash to sunburn to insect bites. It also makes a fab lip gloss for mamas.
Once your babe is smelling sweet and fresh, keep the organic theme going with a luxurious organic towel. The Breganwood Hooded Organic Cotton Baby Towel will have your baby enveloped in gentle, organic cotton – not a scratchy, harsh fibre in sight! Finish off with a delightful dusting of Aromababy Natural Powder and the organic lavender will complete a rather relaxing bedtime routine.
Keep in mind that while you may be using gentle products on your baby’s skin, some little ones with sensitivities may have a reaction to the cleaning products you use around the home. You can go completely free of any type of cleaner, and just use an Enjo Bathroom Glove, which is designed to get rid of grime and mould.
If you like your bathroom to not only look clean, but have a fabulously fresh smell, Cinderella has a range of natural cleaning products, including the coconut-fragranced Bathroom Cleaner. Australian made and free from chemicals, it packs a punch when it comes to keeping dirt at bay. And baby (or whichever parent drew the short straw to clean the bathtub) won’t choke on the fumes!
Once you have children, your laundry will become one of the most-used rooms in your home – particularly in the newborn stage, as babies work through their tiny wardrobes in record time. It’s really important to consider what laundry detergent you’re using, to ensure your baby’s skin is kept free from unnecessary chemicals. Resparkle’s Organic Laundry Liquid is the bees knees when it comes to baby-friendly washing – and it’s also great for the environment. It’s entirely plant-based, can be used in front or top loaders and smells divine.
Finally, here’s a natural way to keep dreaded mosquitoes at bay – slip on a Mosquitno citronella band (children’s bands are also available) and you’ll all be bug free without smelling like an insecticide factory.
While it may seem difficult to keep it down to earth when you’re dealing with baby mess and mayhem, there are gentle options to soothe young skin and keep your house sparkling fresh, the natural way.
