Don’t dismiss the local sports shop as not having anything fun for littlies in the swimwear department, Speedo has blown us out of the water with their cute and quirky designs for kids. Pineapple one piece and Happy Days one piece are available in sizes 1 to 7, priced $45 each.

For those who love a retro look when rocking the surf and sand, Rock Your Baby has several brilliant swimwear options available. For boys, the Surfin’ Safari Boardshorts ($59.95) teamed with the Electric Warrior Rashie ($39.95) is a winning combination. For the little ladies, it doesn’t come much sweeter than the Heidi Long Sleeve Swimsuit Set ($59.95).

It seems only right that an iconic Aussie brand such as Bonds should kit out our kids by the beach. I love the Bonds Short Sleeved Zip Swimsuit, perfect for wriggly bodies and summertime splashes! Available in sizes 0 to 2, they’re priced $34.95 each direct from Bonds.

For babies getting a feel for the water, a Bambino Mio Swim Nappy is brilliant. Super soft and with a comfortable drawstring fit, they’re completely washable and reusable. Find them at Lime Tree Kids, $24.95 in sizes to fit babies weighing 5kg to 15kg.

Occasionally I see a child’s swimsuit and yearn to find the same in an adult size. This season, that wish comes with the stunning Ruffle Swimsuit ($84.95) from Minnow Swim. I’m a sucker for a dainty ruffle, and these which float over the front and back of the suit are positively glorious. Boys aren’t forgotten either – the Stripe Boardie ($74.95) is very French Riviera! Available locally from Hello Little Birdie.

A long time favourite at Babyology HQ, Babes In The Shade never fail to deliver the summertime goods. A one-stop-shop, you can kit out the whole family here – from kids to adults, there’s bottoms, rashies, hats and bathers to pick through! Rashies are priced $44.95 in sizes 1 to 12.

Kids can be funny creatures. If the feel of sand or seaweed under their feet has them not wanting to get in the water, a clever pair of Toddler Beach Booties might be the answer. A swim shoe made from neoprene, they’re both lightweight and comfortable in the surf. Head to Minnow to see the full collection available, $35 a pair.

With a UPF50+ range of swimwear, Platypus Australia is a perfect fit for our hot Australian summer. Little lads and ladies will be sure to be the cutest tots poolside in a fab Lobster Catch Baby Sunsuit, $54.95. There’s a suit sized to fit everyone!

There’s great value to be found at Cotton On Kids for swimwear. The virtual aisles are filled with bold colour and prints for one and two piece bathers, boardies, rashies and bikini bottoms. Prices start at a super low, budget friendly $12.95.

Sun glare off the water and sand can be troublesome, and nonetheless you’re never too young to practice good eye care. Squids Kids Sunglasses are perfect for playing around in the water – a comfortable, close wrap fit for ultimate sun protection, they also float! Prices start at $34.95 for Mini Squids, available from Eye Tribe.

For keeping kids hair under control, limiting hair washes or just looking ridiculously cool – dive into the Poolbeanies collection of funky printed swim caps. Sized to fit kids aged 1 to 6, they’re priced NZ$15.95.
